Mountain View, California, April 11, 2010 – Mr. Cheng-Yaw Sun, Executive Chairman of hiSoft Technology International Limited, shared his vision and stories with 135 Silicon Valley upcoming talents during a two hour presentation hosted by HYSTA Global Services Chapter.
“I’m at the stage of working for my dreams…” Mr. Sun started his presentation about his legendary story of a 25 year career at Hewlett-Packard. He moved from college intern to engineer to sales and eventually became the CEO of Greater China at HP. Mr. Sun summarized his view of the four stages of a career – “Work for a living”, “Work for growing your capabilities”, “Work for your dream” and the highest stage of “Work for Society”. Mr. Sun told the audience that the decision of taking early retirement from HP, and then joining hiSoft as Executive Chairman, was to follow his dream, a dream of not just pointing out problems, but of solving problems. Mr. Sun encouraged the audience to pursue their dreams and face up to challenges.
When asked the question of whether he thinks young professionals are concerned about not being ready for opportunities, Mr. Sun replied, “Courage is more important than being ready.” He continued on that three key forces drive the success of a person’s career: “Personal Goals, the Right Mindset and Professional Skills.”
In the second part of the presentation, Mr. Sun introduced hiSoft’s culture, business structure, and his unique view of China’s opportunities and challenges. hiSoft’s worldwide operations are run using a Multi Dual-Shore model that has proven successful. Mr. Sun also mentioned there is a big demand for global talent at hiSoft. There might even be good opportunities for Silicon Valley professionals who are interested in a career change.
The presentation was passionate and well received. Many interesting questions were asked during the talk and the networking session afterwards.
